Google Global Science Fair - Calling All Student Scientists

Image
In an attempt to compete against (or hopefully compete with) prestigious contests such as the Intel Science Talent Search or Siemens Science and Technology Competition, Google's stepped into the arena with the Google Global Science Fair. Open to all students from around the world ages 13-18 and working individually or in groups of two or three, the contest represents a nice opportunity for students to get involved and excited about science, technology, and of course, some valuable experience using Google products. I like that the process seems a bit more open to all students (not just the already scientifically inclined) and less intimidating than the aforementioned contests. Check out the promo video below, and sign up here to register. For more thoughts on Technology,  please consider subscribing to the RSS feed or through email .

The Best Online Periodic Tables - Something for Every Student

Image
Although I'm out of the chemistry lab, I'm still involved with teaching the subject through private tutoring and online through Northwestern's online learning program. As students and teachers become increasingly attached to their computers both in and out of the classroom, they often have the need to use a periodic table online. Here are a few of the best versions that go above and beyond the traditional paper copy. They are all quick to load, stable, and would surely make Mendeleev proud.

Exploring the world through Discovery Education Streaming - Atlas

Image
Perhaps one of the more underutilized applications available at ETHS, Discovery Education Streaming offers over 80,000 embeddable and/or stand alone video clips for teachers to use, stream, and download through our servers. We last discussed how to begin taking advantage of the assignment, quiz, and writing prompt builder tools , and today, we'll dive into one of my personal favorites, the Atlas feature.

Art and Physics - Alexander Calder @ MCA Chicago

Image
Image by farlane via Flickr I try to take advantage of Chicago's rich cultural institutions during the summer, and one of my favorites is turning out to be the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) .  I often like to go on their free day (Tuesdays) and try to time it so I can hop a free tour as well (1pm, 2pm, 6pm on Tuesday).  Today's tour focused predominantly on Alexander Calder and several artists influenced by him.  I could not help but be amazed by the connections to science and engineering that Calder, Middlebrook, Boyce and others made in their works.
